Smriti Irani will fight a general election against Congress President Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. It is her second attempt to win this seat; in 2014 she lost to Mr. Gandhi with a margin of over one lakh votes.
Notably, Rahul Gandhi has never lost a seat from Amethi. In 2009, Mr. Gandhi won Amethi constituency by a margin of 3.70 lakh votes and in 2014 margin was 1.07 lakh.
Smriti Irani has claimed that Rahul Gandhi does not have time for the people of Amethi. He has not given time to critical issues of Amethi. “He has only criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Irani.
Why is Amethi crucial for BJP?
Amethi is home to many prominent leaders of Indian National Congress. The seat is always held by the Congress leaders such as Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi.
Congress president Mr. Gandhi won this seat consecutively from 2004 t0 2014, which made him the only MP who held this seat for the most prolonged period.
In 1998, Dr. Sanay Singh managed to win the seat with a margin of over 23000 votes. However, a seat is lost to Sonia Gandhi in the 1999 general election.
If Irani wins against the Congress president, then she will make history and Amethi is going to be a most significant loss for the Congress. It will also boost the morale of BJP in state elections.
In 2014, Irani managed to reduce the victory margin of Congress president from 3 lakh to 1 lakh. No one will surprise if she manages to defeat Rahul Gandhi. It is expected that the winning margin will be narrower than the last election.
